Action
The following properties of the individual ingredients explain the rationale for their presence in PAPYTAZYME - the comprehensive digestive formulation.
Pancreatin
It is a mammalian pancreatic extract containing enzymes having protease, lipase and amylase activities. Its enzymatic activity is greatest in neutral or slightly alkaline media. In the intestinal environment, pancreatin breaks down complex food substances into simpler molecules so that the subsequent absorption process is favourably hastened. It breaks down proteins into peptides and amino acids, hydrolyses fats to glycerol and fatty acids, and converts complex starch into dextrins and simple sugars. Pancreatin exerts its primary effects in the duodenum and upper jejunum. Given its susceptibility to inactivation by gastric acid, the use of H2 receptor antagonists or proton pump inhibitors concurrently alongwith pancreatin can be of invaluable clinical benefit as these antiulcerants lessen the destruction of pancreatin by the gastric acid thereby making it available at the site of action.
Ox bile extract
Bile salts present in bile are crucial for emulsification and solubilization of dietary fats and fat soluble nutrients thus facilitating their digestion and subsequent absorption. Bile also has a mild stimulant action on intestinal peristalsis.
Ginger Oleoresin
It is a carminative and an antinauseant. It promotes the expulsion of gases from the GIT and gives a feeling of warmth and comfort in the abdomen.
Activated Charcoal
It is a porous solid substance with excellent adsorbing activity. It is helpful in adsorbing toxins, invading microorganisms and abdominal gases. It is clinically useful in treating irritative diarrhea and flatulence, and also to reduce gas shadows prior to abdominal x-ray investigation.
Safety
Papytazyme is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile. However, very rarely it may cause buccal or perianal soreness, diarrhea and hypersensitive reactions in some individuals. Pancreatin may interfere with the absorption of dietary folic acid. Individuals on long-term pancreatic enzyme replacements should be periodically monitored for folic acid status and given proper folic acid supplementation wherever necessary.
